Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City is one of the oldest suspension bridges in America. It was built between 1870 and 1883, but its construction history goes back to even before that time. John Augustus Roebling first designed a bridge across the East River, then known as the North River, with his father’s company in 1852. The bridge was completed in 1883.
Tower Bridge
The Tower Bridge in London is one of the most famous bridges in the world and it’s definitely a must-see when visiting England’s capital city. It was built between 1886 and 1894 by Sir Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry. The bridge crosses over the River Thames near the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of the city.
Sydney Harbor Bridge
The Sydney Harbor Bridge is another iconic bridge that can be found in Australia’s largest city. It was built between 1923 and 1932 by Dorman Long and Co Ltd of Middlesbrough, England. The bridge’s location was chosen to give Sydney Harbour Bridge the widest navigable clearance of any bridge in Australia. It has since become one of the most recognized symbols of Australia and is visited by more than eight million people each year.
Dom Luis I Bridge
Another bridge that’s made a name for itself as one of the most iconic structures in Portugal is Dom Luis I Bridge. It is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. At its construction, its 172 meter (564 ft.) span was the longest of its type in the world.
Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the most famous and photographed bridges in the world. It was built between 1933 and 1937 by Joseph Strauss. The bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait (a name given to it by John C. Fremont) and has become an iconic symbol of the city. It is also one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge is another newer bridge that’s quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most impressive bridges in the world. It was built between 1988 and 1998 by the Japanese construction company, Kajima Corporation. The bridge is one of three that connect Kobe to Awaji Island and it’s considered Japan’s longest suspension bridge with a central span of 1991 meters (6360 feet).
Hohenzollem Bridge
Finally we have a famous German bridge: the Hohenzollern Bridge. It was built between 1903 and 1906 by Karl Schmieder and Wilhelm Böckmann and it’s the oldest surviving railway bridge in Germany. The bridge crosses the Rhine River at Mannheim and is a major tourist attraction, especially for train enthusiasts. It has also been used as a location for several movies over the years.
